Surgical Oncology (7W)
7 West Surgical Oncology is a high acuity 24 bed adult inpatient unit specializing in gynecology oncology, head/neck oncology and head/neck benign patients. 7 West also provides care for a variety of other medical/surgical patient populations including but not limited to management of behavioral, respiratory, endocrine, GI, and trauma patients. The unit manages patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy, radiation, leech therapy, total parenteral nutrition and enteral nutrition. This unit cares for complex microvascular head and neck flap patients which includes complex wound management, tracheostomy and laryngectomy patient care. The unit also manages palliative and hospice patient populations at varying stages of their disease progression to include aggressive pain management. Because of the diversity of populations cared for in this unit, once hired 7 West encourages and offers opportunities for their nurses to obtain specialty certification in a number of areas to include oncology, head and neck, med/surg, and palliative care. 1:4 or 1:5
ART 7E Hematology Oncology
ART 7 East is a 19 bed unit that specializes in the care and treatment of Adult Malignant and Benign Hematology, and Oncology patients. The unit manages patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy, and complications of cancer treatment. Along with these designated patients, there are also a variety of medical surgical patients that are placed in our care. The patients tend to range from moderate to high acuity. Because of the specialty of populations in our care, nurses are required to obtain chemotherapy/biotherapy certification within the first year of employment and encourages, and offers, opportunities for their nurses to obtain specialty certification in a number of areas to include oncology, med/surg, and palliative care.
ART 7 West is known as “The Hope Unit”, a 23 bed adult setting, specializing the care and treatment of Adult Bone Marrow Transplant and Malignant Hematology patients. The unit manages patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy, transplantation, and those currently enrolled in clinical trials. The patients tend to range from high to extreme acuity and require constant and consistent observation and assessment. Because of the specialty of populations in our care, The Hope Unit requires chemotherapy/biotherapy certification within the first year of employment and encourages, and offers, opportunities for their nurses to obtain specialty certification in a number of areas to include oncology, bone marrow transplant, med/surg, and palliative care.
Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
