The COVID-19 Clinical Research Center (CCRC) Senior Research Nurse oversees the daily research nurse operations and activities associated with COVID-19 clinical trials. The trials are conducted within a dedicated clinical trials unit at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The research activities include, but is not limited to, the administration of FDA-regulated investigational products to trial participants.
The senior research nurse is responsible for developing, maintaining, and training other research staff on study-specific procedures and SOPs, and ensuring the trials are conducted in accordance with all federal, state, and local requirements. This position oversees and performs as needed, medical procedures that require an RN clinical degree in medical practice. The senior research nurse works under the guidance of the Medical Director and reports directly to the Clinical Research Center Director of Operations. In close conjunction with the CCRC APP, the senior research nurse oversees the activities of CCRC temporary staff and medical assistant(s) who perform clinical trial activities in the unit.
Coordinate clinical trial activities with CCRC staff, study team, and investigators to ensure appropriate staffing levels and participant coordination for daily trial activities
Create trial implementation plans, a summary of study procedures, and orders as needed for protocol activities occurring in the trial’s unit
Hire, train, and evaluate clinical research nursing staff
Assist in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Work Instruction (WI) development
Serve as the lead clinical research nurse to resolve operational issues
Represent the clinical research nurses during leadership meetings, process improvement efforts and issue resolutions
Assist in goal setting for the clinical research nurses in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and work towards achieving goals
Provide guidance and mentorship to support staff in the execution of their duties
Foster an environment for professional development for clinical research nurses
Maintain thorough knowledge in the field through attending related project meetings and symposia, reading related literature, and maintaining professional associations
This role will also manage their own portfolio of clinical trials and study patients, which will include the following responsibilities:
Develop tools for study implementation including eligibility checklist, study reference materials, standing orders and clinical summaries
Determine patient study eligibility, ensure informed consent, and monitor patient’s clinical course
Perform clinical procedures including blood draws, vital signs, drug administration, and specimen collection as outlined in the protocols
Act as a clinical liaison for protocols with clinical teams, patients, other institutions, and drug companies
Educate clinical teams, ancillary departments, patients, and families about protocols to ensure safe and accurate implementation in compliance with protocol requirements
Assist in maintaining IRB and FDA correspondence and regulatory documentation related to patient care and adverse events
Assist in preparing continuation review reports, protocol modifications, and other study reports
Maintain appropriate source documentation, and complete case report forms
Compile and present status reports to PI, research team, sponsors, Consortium partners, regulatory bodies, nursing staff, and physicians as requested
Identify, assess, and report adverse events in accordance with protocol and regulatory guidelines, and institutional policy
BSN or BA/BS in related field
Current, active Washington State Registered Nursing license
Minimum 5 years as a RN
Minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical practice working with FDA-regulated investigational products research setting
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in basic computer skills (EMR, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
Ability to work under pressure related to work/time deadlines
Ability to provide feedback to staff about performance
Ability to identify and escalate issues to leadership, as appropriate
Master's degree in nursing or related field
Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) Certification
Certification or membership in national research nurse organizations
