This position is responsible for providing triage (sorting/prioritizing patients) telephone service to ensure prompt identification of patients with high risk conditions. Along with providing direction of care and clinical phone advice.
Talk directly to patients on the telephone to assess and evaluate their concerns and answer patient questions.
Perform a short evaluation of the patient situation to estimate severity of illness and/or injury including learning about the chief complaint.
Determine the urgency of seeing the patient based on the short evaluation and help patient decide if they need to make an appointment in our office, seek emergency treatment, or treat themselves at home.
Ensure accurate notes of all consultation and treatments are recorded in the patients’ record through the EHR system.
Schedule appointments for patients who do not need to go to the ER but need to see a Physician, and to decide and coordinate timeliness of the visit i.e., urgent, this week, next week, etc.
Serve as a resource for medical assistants.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Skill in using electronic medical records to check patient history.
Skill in using computer database during evaluation as guide to appropriate decision.
Skill in making triage decisions and responding quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Skill in assessing and managing chemotherapy/immunotherapy side effects including electrolyte imbalances, and blood transfusions.
Ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patient/family.
Ability to elicit information needed to make evaluation.
Ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians as needed.
Ability to competently use practice management software, E.H.R.
Must be licensed by the state of Oregon to practice Nursing.
Knowledge of medical practice telephone triage protocols.

Must have diplomacy and tact in handling difficult and irate patients.
Outstanding communication skills and persuasiveness, especially the ability to communicate instructions and procedures for treatments, giving patients and their parents the desired level of comfort and confidence.
