JOB SUMMARY:
LOCATION: John H Stroger JR Hospital
The Nurse Clinician - Infusion, teaches patients/families regarding chemotherapeutic agents, antiemetic therapy and other premeditations, treatment schedules, side effects, adverse reactions and interventions. Administers cytotoxic drugs and other infusions according to established/research protocols. Monitors patients' response and tolerance to treatment. Requests, monitors and reports (as necessary) laboratory results. Establishes access to "difficult to find veins" and maintains central vascular access devices. Manages and maintains personal patient caseload. Identifies patient generally presented with complex nursing care requirements and provides education to staff, patient and family members.
Typical Duties
- Administers chemotherapeutic agents and other infusions as ordered by the physician within established guidelines/protocols
- Teaches patients/families regarding treatment regiment, frequency and length of treatment and nutrition maintenance
- Discusses desired effects, side effects, toxic/adverse reactions and interventions to prevent and/or counteract certain side effects
- Teach patients/families regarding antiemetic therapy, growth factors and immunotherapy
- Assists physician in completing orders for the drugs required by the protocol
- Reviews, monitors, and reports laboratory data according to the protocol
- Monitors and reports patient's response to drug therapy
- Establishes and maintains peripheral, as central venous access devices (i.e., Port-A-Gath, P.I.C.C, and Hickman)
- Teaches patients/families home maintenance of central venous access devices
- Administers blood and blood products
- Provides consultation regarding chemotherapy administration
- Documents pertinent information on designated forms/established computer programs
Reporting Relationships
Reports to the Nurse Coordinator
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university ( Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, required
- Completion of two (2) day Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Course with national certification or to be obtained within 12 months of hire, required
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (Must provide proof at time of interview)
- Three (3) years' experience in administering chemotherapy
- Three (3) years' of full time nursing experience
