The Registered Nurse (Oncology Research) works under the direct supervision of Medicine Service and is responsible for collaborating with other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve maximum quality, patient centered care, positive patient outcomes and appropriate utilization of resources to a culturally diverse Veteran population. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of current nursing experience in Oncology/Chemotherapy Infusion Demonstrated knowledge of oncology procedures and management/monitoring of the various diagnoses and disease processes while working the appropriate internal and external interdisciplinary group. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in performance of research procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in patient recruitment and data enrollment, informed consent, local data collection and follow-up activities. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: The Registered Nurse is required to meet the physical standards as outlined on the OF 178 Certificate of Medical Examination. The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling and pushing. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. Staff may be required to don protective equipment in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. They may also be exposed to Veterans who are combative, secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The Oncology Research Nurse will be responsible for all phases of a research study from study start up to final study close out. Performs work with minimal guidance from management and is responsible for ensuring compliance with Federal Regulations for the Protection of Human Subjects and conducts research activities following all Federal Regulations and Good Clinical Practice Guidelines. Works with investigators to provide clinical management of oncology research protocols in Phase 1-4 clinical trials. Coordinates clinical research protocols from opening to close out and provide protocol specific training to the team involved. The Oncology Research Registered Nurse is self-directed and possesses the competence, knowledge, and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative interdisciplinary practice setting. The nursing process will enable effective implementation for health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and operative use of the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and prioritize research protocols. Other duties include, but not limited to the following: Develops written protocol guidelines and training materials and provide clinical services as required per protocol. Acts as the protocol liaison with other clinical and ancillary departments throughout the medical center and other related medical services related to protocol requirements. Guides, directs, and teaches personnel in the Oncology clinical setting regarding the appropriate research trial. Performs nursing assessment as required per protocol, provides direct nursing care and proper supportive care to patients and families participating in research studies. Ensures proper regulatory rules are followed for consenting patients, assessing adverse events, and documenting protocol deviations. Collaborates with the research accounting team to provide clinical information to determine if financial milestones have been reached for research studies. Assesses patient's learning needs, develops and implements a plan to meet needs and instructs patients and families in care, treatment and research measures. Initiation of referrals and modification of plan as indicated. Promotes discharge planning and continuity of care through developing an individualized interdisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with the patient, family, and health care/research team. Involves community resources as appropriate. Demonstrates familiarity with appropriate specimen collection, laboratory results, critical values/parameters and follow up protocols in collaboration with providers. Bone Marrow Aspiration, Chemotherapy Administration, Blood Product Administration, Phlebotomy, Port-a-Cath (PAC) care, medication administration (including intravenous solutions), hand-off communication and emergency intervention: BLS/ACLS. Provides coverage to other nursing programs, as appropriate. Reviews the assessment of patients with complex nursing diagnoses before starting research study. Implements research protocols according to prioritized goals in a safe, therapeutic manner. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and prioritize research protocols. Assesses subtle and potential changes in patients' condition. Notes responses to study medication or treatment and initiates action based on reassessment. Performs other related duties as assigned in functional statement.
