This Staff Scientist will oversee the daily operations of the spatial biology platforms offered by Experimental Histopathology Shared Resource in collaboration with the Genomics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource. The staff scientist will work closely with the cores' technical staff, core directors, and research teams who wish to utilize spatial biology technologies.
Responsibilities
Scope of Responsibilities:
The Staff Scientist will support the Fred Hutch Experimental Histopathology Shared Resource spatial biology projects directed towards alleviating of curing significant human health issues related to cancer and other diseases. This individual is expected to function independently as a motivated core scientist. The position involves supporting the Director in the operational and scientific direction of the spatial biology program of the core, collaboration with the Genomics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource directors and scientific staff, collaboration with histotechnologists supporting spatial biology, interaction and project planning with internal and external customer base, and evaluation and development of new technology offerings. The position will include development and execution of a variety of RNA or protein-based spatial biology experiments.
Essential Duties:
All duties are performed in support of Experimental Histopathology Director and team
Project Management and Scientific Collaboration: Support Director in oversight of spatial biology program. Attend spatial biology team meetings with directors and scientific staff from Experimental Histopathology and Genomics and Bioinformatics Shared Resources. Aid researchers in design of spatial biology studies, choice of an appropriate spatial platform, and provide cost estimates. Work closely with the spatial team to plan, schedule, and execute spatial biology experiments. This includes the operation of spatial biology instruments and supporting software. Provide regular communication with Fred Hutch investigators regarding status of spatial biology studies including routine follow-up and troubleshooting discussions. 40%Administrative Support: Support Director in oversight of fiscal responsibility for Core operations. Work with Director and other Shared Resources leadership to integrate core goals with Shared Resources strategic directions. Understand and advise in maintaining equipment replacement cycle. Assist Director with faculty relationships such as involvement with faculty advisory committee and maintaining strong relationships with all users and user groups. 20%Scientific Stewardship: Understand and keep current on key areas of science and technology, creating an agile organization to make transitions responsive to science and technology. Lead science at Fred Hutch in the field of spatial biology with focus on developing and performing projects in the area of spatial transcriptomics and proteomics. 20%Research and Technology Support: Coordinate with Fred Hutch researchers, divisions and departments to advance support for science and increase understanding of scientific support across the Center. Ensure team members consistently provide a high level of service to all users. Strengthen the core and Shared Resources department through collaboration with customers and other shared resources, education and training events, grant writing to bring in new technologies or processes, and other activities. 15%Training support: Review, enhance and maintain a high-level training and competency determination program for EH staff in association with Director and manager(s). Effectively create personnel talent through focused career development and performance management. 5%Other duties as assigned.Qualifications
Minimum Qualificaitons:
- A PhD in related science field with a minimum of three years of relavent experience
- Experience with spatial biology platforms such as but not limited to Nanostring GeoMx DSP, Nanostring CosMx SMI, 10X Genomics Visium, multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), or multiplex immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence (mIHC/mIF) on tissue specimens.
- The position requires a clear understanding of general disease processes, disease modeling, and basic histology and genomics methodologies.
- Aptitude to learn and utilize new spatial biology analysis software packages.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, motivate, and mentor junior staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of relevant image analysis software packages such as Halo, Visiopharm, ImageJ.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $111,748 to $176,634 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
