The Acute Medicine Registered Nurse manages the care of the acutely ill patient with problems in medical, oncology, and rehab needs through collaboration with nursing staff, physicians, and other health care providers. The RN coordinates and facilitates care to restore stability, minimizing complications, and achieve optimal patient outcomes within a dynamic, acute care environment. Physical Requirements: The position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires restraining confused patients, repositioning patients, assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers/cars, and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift patients. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The Registered Nurse may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. This position requires visual acuity, good hearing, distinctive speech and manual dexterity. This is an excellent floor for both new and experienced nurses. We care for a variety of patient diagnosis, typically consisting of chronic illness' such as heart failure, COPD, renal failure, liver failure, diabetes, and their associated co-morbidities. We also detox patients from both drug and alcohol along which typically is associated with PTSD and/or mental health issues. This is a perfect floor to learn and/or to refine skills like critical thinking and time management. We are a teaching hospital, so there is no such thing as a dumb question. Most of our attending physicians are clinical faculty at the University of Utah and they are supportive of nursing staff. We pride ourselves on being accepting and tolerant of nurses ranging from new grads to the seasoned 25-year nurse. We have an extensive 6-week training program that pairs new nurses with 1-2 preceptors to orient you to our floor.
