About Us

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit, unified adult cancer care and research center that is clinically integrated with UW Medicine, a world leader in clinical care, research and learning. The first National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in the Pacific Northwest, Fred Hutch’s global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy, and COVID-19 vaccines has confirmed our reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy, and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures for the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

Awards

The Daisy Award

The DAISY Award honors the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day, wherever they practice, in whatever role they serve and throughout their careers. The DAISY Award was created in honor of Patrick J. Barnes, who received treatment here at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and was so moved by the care of our exceptional nurses, the DAISY Foundation was formed. The DAISY Award is now celebrated all over the country, in partnership with over 4,500 healthcare facilities to provide ongoing recognition of the clinical skill and especially the compassion nurses provide to patients and families all year long.

Jeanette Lawson, RN, OCN
Jeanette Lawson, RN, OCN

"Jeanette is the hardest working nurse that I've ever come across. Her tenacity, attention to detail and compassion inspire me to be a better nurse every day. She goes above and beyond for not only her patients but for her coworkers as well. She is someone that many nurses go to for advice, support and guidance. Her passion for her work at Fred Hutch is contagious and that enthusiasm creates such a productive working environment. I know that I can speak for the rest of infusion to say that we are so lucky that she works with us."

Patrick Evans, RN, BSN

Jodie David, RN, CHPN, OCN, NC-BC

"Jodie is able to meet with the patient where they are at and then partner with them to better their care. She is an advocate for all patients and routinely uses creative thinking to find ways to help. This nurse is an amazing communicator. I have learned so much from her expertise and caring attitude. Not only does she bring a high level of care to patients, but she also cares for any staff that walks in the door."

Claire Kellogg, BSN, RN
Claire Kellogg, BSN, RN

"From the first visit, Claire made me feel comfortable. She cares for her patients as though we are family. She has been my nurse a couple of times for hydration during my chemo. I know it’s her job to make me comfortable, but it’s more than that. My movements regularly cause the monitor to beep, and every time, even within minutes of each other, she is kind and happy to help. I would request this nurse every visit to Fred Hutch if I could."

Jim Clark, BSN, RN, OCN
Jim Clark, BSN, RN, OCN

"Jim is professional, very knowledgeable and always takes time to chat even though at times it is extremely busy. He makes my wife and I feel like we’re the only patients he has. As medical professionals ourselves, this is a hard task to pull off. His caring and appropriately humorous attitude helps get me through difficult days. Laughter is sometimes the best medicine. My wife and I would like this nurse to be recognized for this award. He is a wonderful RN!"

“As I reflect on my time spent at Fred Hutch, I realize how much the staff did to instill in us students a deeper confidence in ourselves. I find myself at a loss for words as I try to narrow down all of the incredible experiences, I had at Fred Hutch. From the lab to the clinic, from Rad-Onc to Infusion, and all the other fantastic opportunities like genetics, research, classes, and lunch and learns. The patience my nurses had with me was unending and at every turn there was a new exciting learning opportunity or moment of reflection. Every nurse I worked with embodied the ideal nurse I strive to become.”

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I had in the lab. You helped me feel confident in my skills and challenged me. You helped me see that being hard on yourself is not the answer to mistakes but rather learning from them and also being kind to yourself. I felt so much growth during my experience in the lab and that wouldn’t have been possible without your patience and support!”

Diversity

A Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Our values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We believe that every employee is responsible for co-creating an inclusive culture and climate that respects and engages individuals from every background and the communities they represent. Learn more about our mission and values and the leadership of our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Core

Cultivating Communities

Communities are cultivated and sustained by the ongoing commitments of everyone at Fred Hutch through learning, dialogue and meaningful engagement. Being in community requires all of us to make the decision to opt in, especially in the challenging moments, in order to break down silos and build intentional collaboration and partnerships to achieve the mission of Fred Hutch.

Employee Resource Groups and Affiliated Programs

Fred Hutch’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) serve as a resource for employees by fostering a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with organizational mission, values, goals, business practices, and objectives. ERGs are traditionally centered on specific issues and/or communities, usually the voice of communities that are less represented or empowered within the organization, or in the greater community. Fred Hutch ERGs have been catalysts for DEI efforts and progress beginning with the Diversity Council, which now operates as the Community of Employees for Racial Equity ERG and has been contributing to this work for some 20 years!

The Community of Employees for Racial Equity, or CERE, is an ERG committed to serving the Fred Hutch community by giving a voice to racial and ethnic minorities, promoting employee engagement across the center.

The Fred Hutch Rainbow Employees for Equity, or FHREE, ERG supports the mission of Fred Hutch by cultivating a safe and inclusive environment for all LGBTQ+ employees and promoting awareness and community engagement among all staff.

Hutch United logo

Hutch United, or HU, is an affiliated group of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Core and the Office of Education & Training. It is a grassroots organization founded in 2013 by Fred Hutch grad students and postdoctoral researchers — a community built by scientists, for scientists. HU’s mission is to foster a supportive and welcoming community that promotes the success and well-being of marginalized, historically excluded and underrepresented scientists at Fred Hutch. It strives to nurture a sense of belonging and to support these employees’ achievement of self-defined career goals.

The English Language Resource Program is an affiliated program offered by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Core. This program is intended to support native speakers of languages other than English who are new to the U.S. and would benefit from support to navigate a multicultural workplace.

The Black, Indigenous and People of Color, or BIPOC, Caucus is a community initiative, offered by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Core, centering the voices and experiences of people of color at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center as members of the global majority. The caucus prioritizes joy and wellness as a part of the ongoing work within and outside of Fred Hutch and to thrive within systems of oppression and domination.

Environment

Our Environment and Culture

When you join Fred Hutch, you join a world-class team.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Fred Hutch/University of Washington Medical Center among the top Best Hospitals in the Nation for Adult Cancer Treatment.

Following the merger of long-time partners, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the organization was renamed to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. We are an independent, nonprofit organization that also serves as UW Medicine's cancer program.

Fred Hutch has been a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center since 1973. Global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS, immunotherapy and COVID-19 helped Fred Hutch earn recognition as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and has network affiliations with hospitals in five states.

In our clinical setting, nurses, clinicians, researchers, and technicians in one area of expertise work directly with teams from other disciplines including care coordinators, nutritionists, and physical therapists to provide our patients with the best care possible. Our team approach yields better outcomes across the entire spectrum of cancers, as confirmed in a 2015 first-of-its-kind study commissioned by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. We are also proud to be one of the few designated Centers of Excellence by the NIH.

Facilities

Our medical staff has access to the most modern laboratory equipment and imaging facilities available. With many of our doctors conducting research next door to our main clinic, it’s possible for research in our nurses’ and doctors’ labs to be implemented at our patients’ bedsides. Because our cross-disciplined teams can also design their own unique facilities, breakthroughs in the labs can be integrated into our clinic as efficiently as possible.

We are committed to cultivating a workplace in which diverse perspectives and experiences are welcomed and respected. We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity and VEVRAA Employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, ancestry, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, political ideology, or membership in any other legally protected class. We are an Affirmative Action employer. We encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds to apply and desire priority referrals of protected veterans. Read EEO is the Law poster here. If due to a disability you need assistance/and or a reasonable accommodation during the application or recruiting process, please send a request to our Employee Services Center at escmail@fredhutch.org or by calling (206) 667-4700.

Philosophy

Values

Our values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity, and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member, and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger.

Collaboration — We embrace a diversity of perspectives, approaches, and methods, advancing our mission through understanding and inclusion by demonstrating active listening, inquiring and then advocating, advancing solutions, seeking out and valuing diverse perspectives and approaches, respecting potential partners as valuable contributors, and forming teams with inclusion in mind.

Compassion — We acknowledge the humanity and unique lived experience of our colleagues, patients, families, and ourselves by demonstrating respect, patience, and kindness.

Determination — We are committed to overcoming obstacles to deliver on our mission as quickly as possible by making decisions and meeting challenges with a focus on the ultimate goal of lifesaving impact; acting with urgency, persistence and creativity; focusing on solutions and achievement; being driven by quality; finding new ways around problems; and getting curious rather than discouraged when the going gets tough.

Excellence — We define the standard through the exceptional quality of our work by continuing to educate ourselves in our role and in our professional domain; being accountable for our work and outcomes; striving to maintain high-quality research, care and administrative service; ensuring teams are appropriately staffed; and valuing all employees and colleagues.

Innovation — We challenge conventional thinking and seek and foster transformative ideas and practices by supporting and embracing a continuous learning environment, seeking to understand by asking questions, listening with an open mind, and encouraging the activation of bold and creative ideas.

Integrity — We are a trustworthy and responsible partner to our patients, colleagues, and community. We achieve this by following through on commitments; holding each other and ourselves accountable; being transparent, honest, and acting with best intentions; and demonstrating public and private actions consistent with our values and mission.

Respect — We regard and honor each person’s individuality, experiences, and traditions by listening and responding; speaking with truth and honoring others’ truths; appreciating and responding to everyone’s purpose as contributors to our mission; giving due consideration to others as equals to ourselves; and seeking to understand the motivations and drivers of our colleagues’, patients’, and community’s behaviors.

A Commitment to Diversity

Lifesaving research demands more than innovation and dedication. It requires curiosity, creativity, and fresh and varied perspectives. That’s why diversity is a core Fred Hutch value that is integral to our work.

We were the first U.S. cancer center to pledge commitment to CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, and we cultivate a workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives and experiences. The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion — in partnership with an executive council of senior leaders and an employee advisory group — leads our efforts to build a fully inclusive and informed workforce.

Fred Hutch is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to workforce diversity. We strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.
